How did you spend your "working" years, including volunteer work?

Paint chemist. Graduated from Washburn with BS in chemistry and joined Glidden company research center in Cleveland for 1 year before moving to Dallas. Spent about 15 fun and exciting years there before it got too big, then moved to Eugene, Oregon. Spent 19 years there before the winter weather got to me. But it had the most beautiful other 3 seasons of any place. Moved to Ocala, Florida 22 years ago and have enjoyed the weather ever since. Got to experience 3 hurricanes in one year. Glad we didn't live on the coast. Enjoying 1+ year of retirement. Wish I could get my wife to commit to retirement so we had more time to travel. Volunteered in technical societies.

What are your hobbies, pastimes, causes, leisure activities?

Gardening, photography, diving, line dancing, Lions International, politics, enviromental issues

What's on your "bucket list"?

More,European travel, fly in a WWII bomber, commercialize digital photography work, succeed in growing beared iris in Florida, go diving on the reefs off Cuba and Australia, live to get to know great-grandchildren, be involved in archaeological research in Florida waters, help preserve the fresh water resources in Florida, join a wagon train trip in Kansas, watch in person K-State beat KU in basketball, watch HP beat Topeka High again in football.

School Memories:

Beating Topeka High in football, along with a number of sports memories in basketball and gymnastics. Some fun classes and some tough teachers. Getting to know people I had not grown up with and would only know for a few short years before leaving the state.

Thoroughly enjoying retirement after almost 4 years. Doing a little consultant work, but it doesn't get in the way of fun. Too many pets to do much traveling yet (1 dog and 3 cats), but do get to Blue Ridge Mountains, North Georgia Mountains, Sanibel Island each year. Sandi is an excellent artist and threatens to leave me at home the next time to Sanibel so she can just paint all day and have Josie the dog for all the company she needs. I can remember the younger days when someone 71 was OLD and walked slow, bent over, and didn't do much of anything (unless you were a farmer). Now I have 2 artificial knees and one shoulder. 3 Back surgeries and got through prostate cancer, but still have a lot of fun line dancing and gardening and photography. Might move one day soon. Sandi has never gotten used to the Florida summer heat and humidity. If I goes first (likely) she is moving, probably back to some mountains.

Sorry so late with best wishes for a Happy Birthday. A dislocated hip fouled up last week. Hope you have avoided any problems with the covid virus. It has been scary locally here. Our governor has been of no help!

Many Happy Returns! You live not far from my son in Raytown. I plan to be back in Topeka next year. Class 60th! And 100th anniversary of Dad's birth. Oh, to be young again.

Belated Happy Birthday. Thank you so much for your efforts with the bees. They are so important and have been under so much stress in recent years. We plant a number of native wildflowers in our yard that the bees find quite attractive. I am amazed about the number of bees that live in the ground instead of hives elsewhere.

Sorry to learn of Paul's passing. We are here for such a fleeting time. Wanted to send you warm wishes for your birthday and, given your contribution to biomedical science, wanted to share with you a line from George Wills latest book (The Conservative Sensibiliy). "if an individual's DNA were spliced into a single strand, it would extend 20 million kilometers, enough to wrap around the equator approximately 500 times." I just can't wrap my head around that!. I trust you and yours will make it through our virus crisis safely. Keep safe and well.

Sure am sorry to learn of the loss of Paula.  She was my first real date.  A smart, wonderful  and warm person whom I always had a lot of respect for. Bless you Paula and your family.
